States Reorganization:

1947 ---- British ruled provinces were called ‘A’ States. Princely States were called ‘B’ States. Other territories were called 'C' States.
1953 ---- Andhra State was formed bifurcating Madras Presidency.
1956 ---- States were re-organized on linguistic basis (1) A & B States were merged and demarcated and brought under two groups, called (a) States (b) Union Territories (2) Madhya Pradesh formed merging Madhya Bharat, Mahakoshal, Bhopal and Vindhya Pradesh.
1956 ---- Andhra Pradesh was formed merging Hyderabad State with Andhra State.
1959 ---- Gujarat was formed bifurcating Bombay Presidency.
20/Dec/1961 ---- Goa, Diu, Daman were liberated from Portuguese and became Union Territory.
1963 ---- Pondicherry merged with India became Union Territory.
1963 ---- Nagaland attained Statehood.
1966 ---- Haryana State formed bifurcating Punjab and Chandigarh became Union Territory.
1971 ---- Himachal Pradesh attained Statehood.
1972 ---- Assam State re-organized carving out Meghalaya, Manipur, and Tripura as States. Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram as Union Territories
16/May/1975 ---- Sikkim (Himalayan State) merged with Indian Union as 22nd State.
1986 ---- Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh attained Statehood.
1987 ---- Goa attained Statehood. Daman, Diu continue, to be Union Territories.
1994 ---- Delhi attained Statehood
1/Nov/2000 ---- Chhattisgarh formed bifurcating 16 districts of Madhya Pradesh.
9/Nov/20000 ---- Uttarakhand formed bifurcating 13 hill districts of Uttar Pradesh.
15/Nov/2000 ---- Jharkhand formed bifurcating 18 districts of Bihar.
